Anger Control MeditationMeditation

Anger Control Meditation

Anger is an emotion, caused due to an external stimulus or a change that happened in the external environment. Like other emotions, anger can be felt in our body as well as mind. Every person experiences anger, but not having a control on your anger or becoming angry very quickly, has become an illness in many people’s lives. Nobody wants to be angry. But why do people get angry? There are a lot of factors, which cause anger depending from person to person. Few of the causes of anger are as follows:

  • Hereditary
  • Hiding one’s mistakes
  • Negative thinking
  • Analyzing and seeing things only your way
  • Negative energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Illness
  • No understanding power
  • Generation gap
  • Lack of trust on anyone
  • Ego
  • Over –expectation from others

Sometimes short-temperedness or anger is carried forward as a hereditary problem. A child observes everything around him/her very carefully since childhood. The way elders speak, react, say, do different things etc. These observations stay in child’s subconscious mind, unconscious mind, chakras and petals of the chakras. The petals of the chakras carry all the habit of a person. Sometimes when the elders in the family are very hot-headed the child also adopts this habit. The petals of the chakras of small children are like blank slates. They adopt whatever they observe or are taught to them. This is what is called hereditary problem, which gets carried forward from the elders in the family.

The other causes like negative thinking, lack of understanding power, hiding one’s mistakes, ego, etc. are imbibed within the chakras of a person, subconscious and unconscious mind and are very difficult to get rid of.

The problem of anger causes drifts in personal as well as professional relationships and thus indirectly causes trouble in day-to-day work and life. It causes a great negative impact on overall mental and physical health. People express their anger in different forms:

  • Outward aggression and violence – such as shouting, hitting or throwing things and being physically violent or verbally abusive and threatening others.
  • Inward aggression – such as hating yourself, cutting yourself off from the world and self-harming
  • Non-violent or passive aggression – such as ignoring people or refusing to speak to them, being sarcastic, being cold etc.

How can anger affect mental and physical health?

Excessive Anger can contribute to mental health problems, and make existing problems worse. It causes stress, depression and anxiety. It also causes sleep problems, eating problems, alcohol misuse etc. Experiencing strong anger regularly or for prolonged period can also cause problems like cold and flu, gastro-intestinal (digestive) problems, high blood pressure, weak immunity, weak memory, diabetes, heart attack etc.

What happens in our body when we get angry?

If we see scientifically, a lot of our emotions are processed in amygdala. Amygdala is that area of the brain which alarms a person in difficult times and where fight or flight reaction happens. In some people, amygdala is so efficient in warning, that before neurons takes the situation to the pre-frontal cortex, which is the judgement area, amygdala gives the signal to the body to react. There is one more neurotransmitter chemical, which is released and is called catecholamine, because of which a person experiences a burst of energy for a few seconds. Apart from this adrenal gland releases adrenaline, norepinephrine, epinephrine and cortisol. All these things together, excites a person to over react or fight. Because of the delay or failure in reaching the message to the pre-frontal cortex, a person is unable to think or understand anything. This is the reason, why some people do not remember what they said or did in anger. They loose the control on their actions too.

* The release of epinephrine and norepinephrine during anger constricts blood vessels and forces the heart to pump faster. This can damage artery walls and even speed up the process of atherosclerosis (The build-up of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls). The fatty plaque build-up begins to narrow the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack, stroke, or death.

* Excessive anger and stress increase adrenaline and cortisol, which increases blood sugar and risk of insulin resistance and can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

* Chronic anger leads to shrinkage of the hippocampus damaging memory and narrowing attention.

What to do about anger?

Getting control over anger means learning ways to help your Pre-Frontal cortex to get the upper hand over amygdala, so that you have control over how you react and think wisely and handle situations rationally; instead commit such a mistake in anger, which cannot be reversed.

But one becomes helpless in situations which gives rise to anger within them. Is there any medicine to cure anger?

No.
